Millennials Aren't Passionate? What!?

So basically we're up next. We are this country's next round of innovators, game changers and leaders! It may be hard to believe... we may not even feel like it! You know they just think we're lazy, our work ethic sucks and that we just want things handed to us, but they forget that they sold us this American Dream. That we should follow OUR passions...

I remember the dean of our college came and spoke to my class during my undergrad. I was actually excited - I thought maybe we would get some information on new opportunities. Nope. We were ridiculed for our "lack of passion."

Uuuuuuum no. It's not that we lack passion - they just don't know what we are passionate about. I didn't say anything in that moment, but during my exit I asked "why can't we work with different businesses in the area?" I was told "we have been cautioned not to." Lies!

So when someone comes to you inquiring about something that could be of interest to students - you dismiss it. Okay. During his speech he went on to talk to us about one of his star pupils who was passionate about her career. Granted it was touching story, but it was almost like her passion or their passion was supposed to be ours.

Little did he know that there was author sitting in our class. A fashion or specialist. An event planner. Blogger. I'm not even talking in the future tense. There were students who were actively doing things that they were interested in, but they wouldn't know - because they don't ask. A "what are you interested in" would suffice.

However, instead they push a curriculum on us that's supposed to correlate with the industry we are working towards that is forever changing, but they haven't quite caught up. We can sense that. We were bored in that class. They look at us like we're crazy if we don't want to just go through the textbook. So they call us lazy and say we're lacking passion when in reality we are itching to get out there. This was a creative major!

When he said that I was offended...obviously. Like really? Why not cater to our passions. Sometimes these curriculum's or just streamline for us to take a certain right. We are not shown the various possibilities sometimes. So we're kind of left out there wondering..."what on earth am I supposed to do?" I can be honest I don't feel like I learned ish during my undergrad- not to say I didn't develop a skill set. However, I felt like it was developed more outside of the classroom.

Sometimes that's all it is...we just want to do it! Not to take shortcuts, but to just get out there! So no your passion is not our passion. It's the goal of each generation to trail a new blaze and we're already setting it on fire!
